Overview

There are many things to consider in preparation for expanding or building a new facility such as; What is the size we need not just for today, but for the next 3 to 5 years? How should we accommodate for new products? What type of production layout should we consider?

Proper planning is important because it sets the stage for the layout. When expanding or moving/building a new facility the key goals are to:

  • Operate at low cost
  • Accommodate new products
  • Produce varied products
  • Produce potentially high and / or low volume products
  • Produce at a high quality level

The key to proper planning is to evaluate your current needs and determine the requirements for your future needs. It makes no sense to go through the expense of expansion or move/build and find you’ve undersized your facility or will outgrow it in only 1-2 years.

Over the next several weeks we will cover in more detail the 5 key areas dealing with proper facility planning and layout. These are:

  1. Data Gathering
  2. Short and long-term volume requirements and capacity analysis
  3. Facility Sizing
  4. Macro Layout
  5. Detailed Layout

Join us next week as we discuss the information needed for the analysis of current and future capacity needs and to determine space requirements.
